on procrastination,
or,
never put off 'til tomorrow
what you can put off until the day after tomorrow
slowly i turn,
step by step…
loathe to shoulder the sisyphean wheel
like cold molasses
bulging
surging against inertia
what i would do if i put my mind to it
is so much better than what i will do now.
fluttering, twitting thoughts fly by
wheeling flocks of starlings in my mind's eye
dancing their distraction
there might be a hurricane
or a fire
some natural disaster to make all meaningless
all my petty sweat washed away in briny apocalypse
catch up with friends,
clean… anything,
fuss, fiddle, piddle, file
the daily zen of pre-enlightenment,
chop wood, carry water, busy brain
against the tyranny of towering todos,
each monstrous in my apprehension
I totter, I gyre, I spirograph
around the tasks at hand
afraid to look too closely,
afraid to see, afraid to fail
the unstarted task cannot fail.
And yet.
The unstarted task has failed.
